{"id":108,"date":"2017-01-21T17:39:53","date_gmt":"2017-01-21T15:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/itay.mobi\/blog\/?p=108"},"modified":"2017-10-17T09:38:42","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T06:38:42","slug":"12-smart-boiler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itay.cc\/?p=108","title":{"rendered":"$12 Smart Boiler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I moved to a house where I don&#8217;t have a gas water heater.<br \/>\nNow when it&#8217;s winter I need to plan my showers and turn on the boiler in advanced.<\/p>\n<p>Since the IOT era began, I can see more and more solutions for connecting the boiler<br \/>\nto a smart wifi switch (switcher, SwitcHeat and more..) , but hose solution are very expensive.<\/p>\n<p>I consider myself as a Maker, and I like DIY solutions so I tinkered a smart wifi control using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itead.cc\/sonoff-pow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sonoff pow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sonoff is a wireless switch which can control electronic devices such as home appliances via WiFi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/itay.mobi\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sonoff_Pow_Wiring.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/itay.mobi\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sonoff_Pow_Wiring-300x215.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"547\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itay.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sonoff_Pow_Wiring-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/itay.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sonoff_Pow_Wiring-768x551.png 768w, https:\/\/itay.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sonoff_Pow_Wiring.png 964w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It support max power of 3500W which should be enoughWhy I used sonoff pow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It uses ESP8266 so I can flash\u00a0my own \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/arendst\/Sonoff-MQTT-OTA-Arduino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other firmwares <\/a>and add MQTT control<\/li>\n<li>It has a nice app to control it, add timers and even share the device so my girlfriend can use it as well<\/li>\n<li>I can see the power consumption which is good to make sure the boiler is working and<br \/>\nalso nice addition to see the total cost each use\/day\/moth<\/li>\n<li>Can be also controlled manually (like a regular switch)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sonoff has aonther model called &#8216;sonoff TH16&#8217; that also can handle 3500W.<br \/>\nThis model does not able to measure current and unable to show the power consumption, but can also be used.<br \/>\nthe TH16 has few more connections on the board that might ease connecting it to a switch.<\/p>\n<p>Sonoff pow has one momentary\u00a0button. Pressing this button will toggle the connected device on and off.<br \/>\nLong press (5 seconds) will make it enter into a pairing mode for pairing with the app.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before I start writing about my installation, please note that dealing with mains electricity should<br \/>\nbe only\u00a0handled<\/strong><strong>\u00a0by electricians. If you does not know what you are doing, please don&#8217;t try this.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> If you decide to make your own, please make sure you shut the boiler power<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>from the main switch and also check that the &#8216;Live&#8217; wire is not live with a tester.<br \/>\nI take no responsibility.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What you will need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itead.cc\/sonoff-pow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sonoff Pow<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.electrocohen.co.il\/items\/729781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Box and switch for the boiler<\/a> (if you don&#8217;t have one already)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.azrad.co.il\/product\/%D7%9C%D7%97%D7%A6%D7%9F-%D7%9C%D7%97%D7%93%D7%A8-%D7%9E%D7%93%D7%A8%D7%92%D7%95%D7%AA-%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%90%D7%A8-%D7%AA%D7%94%D7%98-%D7%A9%D7%95%D7%91%D7%9C-%D7%9C%D7%91%D7%9F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stairway momentary button<\/a> (optional)<\/li>\n<li>wires and solder iron<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I replaced the switch in the panel\u00a0with the stairway momentary button.<br \/>\n(If you don&#8217;t want\/need a manual control to start\/stop the boiler you don&#8217;t need this button)<br \/>\nI did this because the sonoff&#8217;s button is also a momentary push button, and like I said before &#8211; long press will put it in<br \/>\npairing mode. If I use a regular on\/off button I need to imitate this action every time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/itay.mobi\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC_0587.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then I had to trim the switch connectors because they are too big and won&#8217;t let me close the panel.<br \/>\nAfter I trimmed them, I also soldered a wire to the switch https:\/\/itay.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC_0616.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next step is to track the sonoff&#8217;s switch on the pcb and connect it to the wires from the new switch.<br \/>\n(again, if you don&#8217;t use the button skip this)<\/p>\n<p><a already) and connect the boiler and the\u00a0mains electricity.<br \/>\nto the sonoff. <strong>Check again that you don&#8217;t have\u00a0a live electricity!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/itay.mobi\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC_0579.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-135 \" https:\/\/itay.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC_0579.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Connect Line\u00a0to Line (Live\/Phase) , Neutral to Neutral (Zero) and Earth to Earth.<br \/>\nNote that the input Line\u00a0is on the right and the output Line is on the left.<br \/>\nI already had the Earth shorted so I didn&#8217;t connect it to the sonoff.<br \/>\nI also managed to break the Line connector so I soldered a thick wire straight the pcb.<br \/>\nIn addition, I\u00a0added a kapton tape on the area the new switch might touch to avoid shortening the circuit.<br \/>\nIf you have an indicator light you can connect it to the output Line and Neutral in the sonoff as well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" put back the power on.<br \/>\nOne press on the switch should start the boiler, another one should stop it.<br \/>\nIf you have an indicator light you should see it turning on and off.<\/p>\n<p><a
